Wizards, Philosophers & Visionaries at Bedrule Church
On a beautifully sunny evening in April 2026 we launched our first talk series at Bedrule Church. The church was filled with candles, flowers and budding spring branches, and a good crowd gathered to natter and enjoy refreshments beforehand. The event proved the space to be perfect for listening, learning, lively discussion and reflection.
Local organisation Maiden Mother Crone CIC organised for historian Mary Craig to illuminate the mysterious life of Duns Scotus - a hugely influential thinker of his time who changed the course of Western theology. Though from the Borders originally, he is little known or celebrated here. Mary’s engaging and lively style brought him and his radical thought to life in Bedrule Church.
As is the intention with each of the talks in this series, the space was held for discussion and reflection of what we had heard. Some really interesting ideas came up and were recorded by Maiden Mother Crone director Dawn. MMC’s aim is to bring these figures of the past to life so we can reengage with their stories, but also to consider and potentially capture locally engrained knowledge and understanding of these figures.
If you missed this first event, come along to one of the upcoming events in the series where four figures from the Scottish Borders are reflected upon. Philosopher, Prophet, Wizard, Saint.
29 April — Duns Scotus: The Subtle Doctor
27 May — Merlin: The Wild Man of the Woods
24 June — Michael Scott: The Wizard of the Eildons
29 July — St Cuthbert: From the Tweed to the Edge of the World
Come to enjoy and learn, but also if you have stories, memories, local knowledge, or family connections to the figure being discussed, this is the space to share them.
You can book your tickets here
And can read more about all the events on our Events Page.
Bedrule Church Future is exploring the kinds of events and interactions that the church can hold, and we welcome thoughts, reflections and feedback. Collaborating with local organisations like MMC is something we hope to do much more of. We are also looking for volunteers to take part in events and to contribute to the running of the charity. Please do get in touch and let us know if you are interested.
